[00:00:02] Speaker A: Raising livestock, bucking horses in this situation and something we can all take away from this one crew. Let's ranch it up.
Good day everyone and thanks for riding with us on this all new episode of the Ranch it Up radio show. I'm Jeff Tigger Earhart.
A big thank you goes out to our partners ranchchannel.com Wolf cattle Jorgensen Landon Cattle Trans Ova Genetics Axio to animal health bringing us multi man and lacta pro the American Galvi Association Imogene ingredients bringing US Pharma 10 West Wave feed products Medora boot and western wear the world famous Mile City buck and horse sale Allied Genetic Resources and Allied feeding partners livestock market.com equinemarket.com auction time.com the Tri State Livestock News RFD TV Wrangler and this fine radio station Raising livestock. It doesn't matter what they are. Catt sheep, pigs, goats, horses, bucking horses. It's a little bit different, yet the same way as any other livestock enterprise. We're talking bucking horses. But this one today takes a unique twist. Stan Headings from Headings Rodeo has been in the business of raising bucking horses and rodeo promotion and production for over 20 years. And we'll get into how he uses places like the Mile City Bucking Horse sale as a way to showcase his genetics in just a tick. But let's first talk about the opposition. Yeah, those people, groups and organizations that will attack animal agriculture and those who simply have been misinformed and don't have the understanding of what we do at the end of dirt road. Stan, thanks so much for coming on the program with us today. I absolutely just love how you look at the other side of the aisle, if you will.
[00:01:57] Speaker B: I just love when we have, when we go to these big cities and we have rodeos and I try to go out and eat at places and I'm not afraid to just go mingle up to the bar with somebody that doesn't even know there's rodeo in town. And so they obviously strike up a conversation. Of course, the first thing is if they've never been around rodeo or heard about rodeo or, you know, they've heard about it, but they've heard it's animal abuse. And so I love sharing my story, my side of them and showing them pictures of my, my horses and that, that I can walk up to and pet in the pasture and my family with me, it's our family project. You know, it gives them a whole new concept and outlook when all they'd heard was oh my gosh, you're abusing these horses. They're wild bucking horses and they're crazy. Like, no, no, you don't understand. It's, it's like what you're like your little dog that you teach to fetch, right? Like, like you teach him things or, or he runs, he's an athlete almost to that point point where you know, he enjoys doing that. He brings the ball back to you. This is what these horses are bred to do. Like they're bred to buck and they enjoy doing that. So when your dog gets hurt fetching that ball, what do you do? You, you take care of him better than your kid almost, because you love that animal. That's the same exact thing for these bucking horses that I do. I love them so much. And, and that's just the passion I have. And so when I explain that to these people, you know, maybe they understand a little bit. They get to hear, like I said, our side of the story a little bit because they've been so misled. I feel like in the past that now they, they maybe, maybe they want to come enjoy and it's an eye opener for them to go. The western way of life is actually not so bad. It's great, you know, it's a great sport.
[00:03:32] Speaker A: How do you deal with opposition from that person that, that may get a little bowed up to you, Stan. And they want their voice to be heard and the reasons why they feel the way that they do. How do you deal with that opposition?
[00:03:46] Speaker B: Well, one, I don't need to argue with those people. You know, a lot of those people have their mind made up already and so there's no need to arguing with them. But what I do is I share my lifestyle with them. I share pictures, photos, stories of my passion. And as you probably tell now, like, it's a passion I have for these, for these horses. Like, I love horses and I love raising bucking horses. So when I share my story about how we raise these and how we treat them and, and how we feed them and what all they do and, and how it's kind of our lifestyle, it gives them a whole different outlook from what they've heard over the news or heard from so many people, that has been incorrect information about it. And so then when you can strike up a conversation and show them, like they've probably never talked to anybody that actually has raised horses. It's all been hearsay or through third parties. So when they actually can get to that person and hear his side of the story and see pictures, it turns out for the most part. Most of those people understand it's not quite as bad as they thought it is. And it's actually, this is American family raising bucking horses and this is what they do and this is like their pets, like their dogs, you know.
[00:05:00] Speaker A: So have you ever been able to, when you said that you aren't afraid to go talk to somebody, you aren't afraid, especially when they. People will see us wearing hats. Right. When you're in a big city and we stick out like a sore thumb. Right. So a lot of times people will come up and, and ask a question and I love that when they actually initiate. So have you ever been able to put the two together where you maybe talked about, showed pictures of, of your family and your stock and the herd and your beautiful ranch and all those types of things? Have you ever had somebody come to the event or anything like that? Were you ever able to put two and two together like that?
[00:05:39] Speaker B: Yeah, I have, I have. You know, there's been several experiences where I've been able to do that in a city. And then the next night they come to the rodeo because they hadn't planned on going there, didn't even know about the rodeo. Like you said, they saw the hat, they strike up a conversation and then they come to the rodeo and enjoy and it kind of trickles down to some of the events. I put on like, like a sponsor and I love getting sponsors that are non rodeo related and I love having fans come to the events that are non rodeo people just to share our way of lifestyle. And so when you reach out to them and you show them these things and you explain the lifestyle to them and interact with them and maybe answer some questions that they were unsure of prior to that. The next thing you know, they want to be involved. Like they, they feel like it's an American family sport. And they, like I said, next thing you know, they want to be involved and they're calling me, they're wanting to come back, you know, and that's great. I mean it's because it's such a unique opportunity for a family sport. From starts with the kids stick horse race, right. Everybody, everybody almost in some point in their life wanted to be a cowboy. You know, whether you're sitting at home watching it on TV or, or the news flashed a bronc ride or something and you. Everybody's dreamed of being a cowboy for a split second possibly. So when I can talk to those people, introduce them to this, they come to the events or you have the conversation, it makes them some of those, you know, that might be the only time they ever have the chance to talk about that or, or maybe fulfill some of their questions they had and they have the opportunity to really get an inside look on that. And so then they can come to the rodeo and enjoy that. It answers a lot of their questions.
That's what I like about people that don't understand it. Just because it's, it's, it's something, it's just my passion that I love. Spreading the word, you might say, well.
[00:07:35] Speaker A: I mean, you want to talk about a tremendous lesson we can all learn from right there, Stan, I'm going to take this and you know, take a 30,000 foot view and land the plane on this and say it isn't just rodeo, but it's animal agriculture in general of what you're just describing. Because it's passion, it's commitment, it is in many times risking our own lives during winter. And I mean all those types of things. So it doesn't matter if we're running a bunch of pasture cattle, if we're raising Angus bulls and having a bow sale or we got a feedlot or our kids are dragging around a couple of show steers or whatever the case is. Animal agriculture in general really, in my opinion needs to have this type of attitude and willingness to, to share our story, to show people. Like you said, pull out your phone and for all of us to do our part to help with that education. That's why I'm going to say this is just animal agriculture in general.
[00:08:35] Speaker B: That's a fact. You know, and pretty much anybody that's involved in it is because of the passion that we have for the livestock and animals. And I always laugh about a little. A little. Meanwhile, I saw that it had a picture of a guy 30 below weather and he's fixing a water, a water tank, it's leaking, that's busted, it's frozen and his fingers are about to fall off. You know, and it's. The caption says, never give up on your crazy, stupid, stupid dreams.
[00:09:06] Speaker A: Right. It's probably Christmas Eve too when he's doing that or something, right?
[00:09:10] Speaker B: Been at that point so many times in my life. You know, it's just that that one always kind of gets me. That's why we do it, you know, that's, that's just, that's exactly why we're doing it at 30 below and taking care of it. Because that's our dream and our goal, our passion.
[00:09:23] Speaker A: Now if that doesn't get a person amped up and proud of what we do at the end of dirt roads. I don't know what does. All right, we need to take our first break and when we come back here on the Ranch It Up Rodeo show. Rodeo Ranch It Up Radio Show See, looky there. He rubbed off on me. When we come back here on the Ranch it up radio show, we talk more with Stan about the bucking horse business and how he uses places like the Miles City Bucking Horse sale to showcase that passion that he was just talking about. We'll be right back. Crew here on the Ranch it up radio show. Keep it locked.

Places like the Mild City bucking horse sale is a must stop for his program. Last year Stan's buck and horses placed extremely well, quite well in the futurity. So this is a great place to pick up where we left off. Stan. For those that don't understand what the futurity is at the buck and horse.
[00:12:25] Speaker B: Sale philosophy, it's a three horse team and it consists of a three year old dummy colt and a four or five year old saddle bronc with a rider and then a six year old or older horse, any age. And so each one of those has their own classes and then it's also a team combined score. The good part is a lot of people have one or two superstars. I mean seems like we all do. But when you get deep like three or four three horse team or five horse team, that's the same age, that's, that takes a pretty stout string. So this has kind of allowed everybody to bring their best one in that age category. It's kind of made for a better futurity. You know what, what Miles City does, they make you sell one of those animals. Hence the Miles City Bucking horse sale. Right.
[00:13:18] Speaker A: I'm so glad that you brought this up because you know, it's called the world famous Miles City Buck and horse sale. In fact their website is buckinhorsesale.com and we talk about the concert on Thursday night and we talk about the extreme bronc match and there's all of these different types of venues or maybe I should say events that go along around the general umbrella of the buck and horse sale. So I'm so glad you brought that up so people understand of how the sale portion goes into what we're having today. Because that's where it originally started was honestly just around a buck and horse sale.
[00:13:57] Speaker B: Exactly. I mean when I was There, you know, 15, 20 years ago, they sold horses for two days almost, it seemed like. And well that kind of transition as time change, you know. And so in the last couple of years they kind of changed some things up by adding this maturity. And then. And now since they've had this sale with the futurity, they have sold some of these horses coming out of this maturity in the last couple years that went on to the NFR right there. So that, so they're gaining a lot of momentum again by bringing in these good horses and which brings good buyers. Right. And so it's, it's actually It's a pretty neat concept they put together. So when you have a superstar, you really need to let that horse go on, right?
[00:14:38] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:14:39] Speaker B: And go to the next level and better himself and be exposed. So for me, you know, I've. I've been raising bucking horses for 20 years now, and I just enjoy.
I enjoy horses, for one, and I enjoy raising a great horse. You know, that's your goal, obviously. But when you. When you get a couple horses that. That everything falls in place and they do what they're bred to do, it's so rewarding. And so the. Just like anything, the more rewards you get, more incentive it is to keep going and keep doing that and to better yourself and the better your program. So we're constantly trying to improve it to get to that level, I guess.
[00:15:18] Speaker A: So when you're in the business and you're trying to raise the best, I mean, ultimately, like you said, you got to sell the best in. Let them. Let that horse go on to greener pastures, if you will, in this situation, go on to bigger arenas. But here's where is something interesting in my opinion. You know, when we compare. Let's. Let's just talk about bucking stock for a minute. Let's talk about livestock. So we've got the bulls on one side, and we got the bucking horses on the other side. And I compare this to kind of fishing, in a way, if you will. So we got the bulls over here and exciting. And everybody likes watching good bull r crying out loud. And that's kind of like the guys that are fishing and they are using every piece of technology, and they are. They are absolutely trying to capture these bass or these walleye in this area. But then on the other side, you have somebody like me that is a fly fisherman, kind of a traditionalist. And this is where I compare the two together, because everybody loves the. The exciting bull riding. But let's talk about the horses here for a minute, because there is something that is almost magical about those bucking horses. It's very raw. It's the way God intended them to be in every way, shape and form. They're doing something natural to them, right? It's in their DNA. It's in their genetics. And when you have the opportunity to see these horses buck as you have, because you've raised them, and you've got to see them grow and change. When they are doing exactly what they're intended to do, which is get out and buck, they are the absolute happiest that horse has ever been in Its life. And it is, it's. Obviously I'm passionate about it, but it is very powerful. It is, it is incredible to see.
[00:17:08] Speaker B: Yes, yes, I agree 100%. You know, your fishing concept is very comparable. You know, for sureties, there's a lot of bull for charities and horse fraternities, they're very similar. And I think a lot of those contractors, they do it for the love of the sport. But at the end of the day, there's a little bit of difference. You know, the horse industry, it takes many years. You know, it's, it's five to six years before you really know what you have. And up to six year old, they're still a cult.
You don't really put riders on until they're three and probably not till they're four or five. So the development stage takes so long just because they're not mature. You know, horse will live to 20, 30 years, where a bull 10 to 15. So they obviously mature sooner. So those maturity guys in the bull side, they get a little bit more return sooner because at the age of two they can put a rider on and also you can buck them bulls a little bit more often than a horse. So it's kind of the same concept, but it, but like you said, it's still kind of two different worlds there.
[00:18:06] Speaker A: You might say it is, it is. So if you had to, you had to give a message to those people that have never been to the Miles City bucking horse sale, what would you tell them? Why to come out to Miles City here pretty darn soon and hang out with us.
[00:18:21] Speaker B: Well, I think nobody can deny that it's a good time. You know, it's been going for years and people from all over the world come there every year. They announce people and introduce people that come from all over the world to come. So it's obviously got a reputation of being, being great entertainment. But for people to come that haven't seen it, it's such a great time and it's such a.
I guess for me, I enjoy seeing those people that have never been because I get to share maybe part of our way of our lifestyle to those people that maybe don't understand what the buckinghorse side or the rodeo side of everything's all about. And so when they come now, they can see for themselves how, just like you said earlier, the horses love what they do. It's nothing short of entertaining. It doesn't matter. Rain or shine, it is such a great time. The stands are packed, the horses are bucking, the cowboys come from miles around. It is literally horse races, you know, in concerts. But it is such a great time just to just to hang out. You know, people camp for days, they hang out with your friends and it's, it's nothing short of a good time.
